Combat feels weighty, intelligent, and satisfying, and it’s not difficult to see why many, myself included, consider the Souls games to have one of the best 3rd person action RPG combat systems ever. Demon’s Souls is a dark fantasy action RPG with several elements that made it stand out from the crowd in 2009. The game is mostly remembered as the originator of the “Souls-like” genre in 3rd person action RPGs.
Some would consider this game a much more tamed version of a hack-and-slash since the attacks are slower than usual. Each swing must be perfectly timed to hit a target; otherwise, it will leave the player vulnerable to incoming attacks. Fortunately, the PlayStation 5 remake feels more responsive than the original version. Originally released for PlayStation 3 back in 2009, Demon’s Souls is the precursor to the Dark Souls series. However, the next moment I remember is fairly unique to this next-gen title. It happened when I was walking down a tight corridor packed with enemies wielding crossbows. As I slowly made my way towards them using my shield to block the incoming bolts, I felt my controller rumble. As the threat neared, the console’s haptic feedback sent the vibrations further up the controller. I realized what was happening just quickly enough to turn around and watch a cluster of boulders bowl me over.
It was also pointed out that the description of the trailer mentions a “Fractured Mode”. While the meaning of Fractured Mode is purely speculation, it could be the implementation of unused content from PS3 where dying in Soul Form resulted in a permanent death. Then a death in Soul form would result in a game over, deleting the character and a full reset. Finally, bosses can be very intimidating and stressful for new players; however, all the bosses in this game have weaknesses and can easily be defeated with the correct preparation. For example, the Tower Knight’s ankles can be hit to emit a blue glow, eventually making him fall to the ground, allowing players to get to his head and do damage. Further on in the game, the Storm King can be defeated by finding the Storm Ruler weapon in the boss fight arena, which can be used to take the boss down from the sky.
